public art
MAI+ originates from the dissonance triggered by encountering an artwork and reading its narration. This discrepancy becomes a pretext for an oppositional exercise against a rooted practice: the mystification of facts and existences through the accounts of people not directly involved.
MAI+ is a meditative moment, a permanent collection in the city, an invention, an interpretation of reality, an invitation to explore possible imaginations, a chance to reappropriate the power of looking, listening and exposure. What does it mean to create a work of art without any materials, using only the senses and experience?
MAI+ focuses on finding spaces of the city and casual compositions that, once named, acquire a potential value. Each of these involuntary creations has a dedicated plaque that contains technical details and a specific narrative, resembling a classic museum caption. This format becomes a way to publicly legitimate the work and put subjective perception at its centre. This raises a bigger question: to what extent does narrative influence perception and the consequent personal positioning? The project is accompanied by a catalogue that puts an empty space next to the description of each work, inviting the public to write down their vision. What would happen if someone picked up the exhibition’s catalogue 50 years from now?
MAI+ becomes an acronym for an invented museum and an exclamation that takes a stand in relation to contemporaneity.
bio
F. De Isabella graduated in Filming and Photography at the Civica Scuola di Cinema in Milan. In 2009, they co-founded Strasse, a performative collective that worked in public spaces. F. De Isabella also works as a sound designer for dancers and performing artists (including G. O. Nardin and C. Bersani). They question artistic production practices from a transfeminist and queer perspective. In 2021, De Isabella resumed their authorial work with DICIOTTANNI – simultaneously an arch of 18 years and being 18 years old, coming of age.
