FUORI! invites Marta Keil and Alexander Roberts, among the founders of The Shake Down, to reflect on the unique features of projects that place adolescents at the centre of their work, involving them in curatorial and artistic practices and transforming cultural institutions into a possible context for radical power-sharing practices.
Between 2022 and 2023, The Shake Down invited ten young people from Latvia and Norway to co-curate two international performing arts festivals: Homo Novus in Riga and Bastard in Trondheim. The teenagers participated in a 15-month exchange and mentoring programme that helped them explore curatorial and festival-making practices: given time, space and resources, they built programmes that overturned conventional ideas of what a festival is, raising questions of belonging and urgency.
Practices like The Shake Down are part of a broader reflection on how art institutions can operate with an attitude that supports practices that are feminist, queer, pro-rest, pro-empowerment, pro-climate justice, anti-racist, anti-ableist and decolonial.

bio

Marta Keil is a curator, dramaturge and researcher, currently based in Utrecht. Her curatorial and research practice seeks for reenchanting the ways of instituting in the performing arts field and building transnational alliances. She has recently curated an artistic research project Breaking the Spell, co-produced by Residenz Schauspiel Leipzig, München Kammerspiele, Performing Arts Institute in Warsaw and Viernulvier in Ghent.

Alexander has worked extensively as an artist, dramaturg and curator in Europe and different parts of the world. Current Artistic and Managing Director at Rosendal Theatre in Trondheim, Norway, former co-Director of Reykjavik Dance Festival (2013-2020), co-founder of the Performing Arts MFA at Iceland University of the Arts (2015-2020), and co-founder of Teenagers in Reykjavík (2015-), Alexander has worked with different approaches to curating with teenagers since 2015.
