Did fireflies actually disappear, as Pasolini argued?
Did they all disappear?
Do they still send – and if so, from where? – their wonderful intermittent signals, despite the darkness of night and the violent spotlights of capitalism?
We feel it necessary to respond to PPP’s desperation with the fact that the lively dance of fireflies takes place in darkness, and it is nothing but the dance of desire that gives life to a community. It is up to us to answer that fireflies have not disappeared, that they still leave glowing trails, and we do so starting from Paul Preciado’s Letter to new activists and Kae Tempest’s music, reaffirming how the bioluminescence of fireflies continuously employs survival strategies. Unlike other animals, fireflies do not emit light to attract prey or to frighten the enemy. They light up to dance and love. Becoming fireflies means that failing, losing, forgetting, undoing, annulling, disfiguring and transforming can be more creative, collaborative and surprising ways of existing.
“They say you have the wrong age, the wrong skin, the wrong sex, the wrong hair, the wrong veil, the wrong gender, the wrong desire, the wrong dream, the wrong documents, that you are on the wrong ground, the wrong continent, that you speak the wrong language, eat the wrong food, love in the wrong way. But you are not wrong, your name is not wrong!”.
